Are you ready to grow up your business?

Many business owners are invited to join the commerce organizations for the purpose of expanding their network and creating business opportunities. However, some bosses have joined the commerce organizations for several years, there are only social activities and have not brought actual benefits to the business. One of my previous articles has talked about the importance of “having connections is more important than having good knowledge”. As a business consultant, I’m a true believer that establishing good interpersonal relationships will definitely help business development. Having good connections is also a strength. So, is joining a commerce organization an effective way to expand your network?

Let’s introduce the nature of different commerce organizations and associations first. Business owners can choose the ones that are relevant to their business or can benefit them the most:

1. Network of professional organizations

Different professions, such as lawyers, accountants, physiotherapists, etc. have their own chambers and associations. These networks of professional organizations provide industry-related training and host networking events. The advantage is that they have an international network, are related to business, but most of the network contacts are peers in the same industry.

2. Charity or non-profit organization

A charity or non-profit organization organized by businessmen and professionals, which not only promotes the concept of business management, but also provides humanitarian assistance. These include Rotary International, Junior Chamber International, Lions Clubs International, etc. The organization also has an international network, but the prerequisite is that the business owner needs to devote himself/herself to the related charitable activities.

3. Business referral network

This type of organization aims at business referrals. Members are professionals from different industries to help each other develop their businesses and achieve quality business referrals. These include BNI (Business Network International), EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization), etc.

4. Regional or context-related networks

Networks for different regions or backgrounds, including The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce, and even hometown associations. The purpose is to provide support and help in all aspects for people from the same background.

Joining a commerce organization is just the first step in expanding your network. Business owners must be proactive and put in the effort to stay in touch with people in order to truly “connect.” Here are some practical tips.

Tip 1: Keep positive thinking

Trying to keep in touch but afraid people think you’re annoying? In fact, take the initiative to care about the other party’s business, the effect may be better than you expected! Of course, if you don’t get a response, you can still keep in touch politely.

Tip 2: Strive to add value

Provide valuable information and offer assistance proactively, such as referring a suitable talent to the recruiter.

Tip 3: A meal is worth dozens of messages

Face-to-face dinners can build relationships. Try to meet in person if you can.

Tip 4: Make good use of social media

Time is limited, so make good use of social media to maintain relationships. Update the corporate website or news in a timely manner. Most people will not actively express their opinions on articles or news, but they are actually paying attention. As time goes by, social media still allows you to create real relationships with your online friends.

I recommend business owners first participate in activities organized by commerce organizations and associations, get to know the backgrounds of their members and feel whether the interaction can create sparks before deciding whether to join. After all, joining the commerce organization requires investment of time and money, and it is necessary to ensure that it is worthy. Networking can indeed bring a lot of convenience and benefits, but it takes time and effort to manage it. Possessing ability and connections, both of which can make the business to a higher level.
